Roses
Such prickly little things,
So sharp and abrasive
Yet beautiful to see.
I was there, the day your seed sprouted
Pink rupturing from the chaotic hues that compose our mind
A sprout, already dawning thorns, hints of what was to come.
You grew so fast, so determinedly,
Always with pride and dignity
You were you, unapologetically.
You took root in all our lives,
Thorns like velcro, no one could hide
With beauty and brilliance you forged your own path
And forever changed ours in the process.
There was a period where things grew dim,
Your flowers wilted
It seemed like the end
“Why are we here, just to suffer?
Why am I me, not another?”
You withdrew to cope and hid away
Chose the mind as your place to play
Shirking responsibility in favor of fun
(Oh, what envy I felt for that one.)
But the system kept changing,
As it always does.
You couldn’t hide forever,
Your roots run too deep
You kept growing and that rose bush began to creep
It saw a vacancy where I once sat
And said to itself “Now here’s a nice place for a plant”
I watched you creep your way back into her heart
Take root on her shoulder
My favorite spot.
Little flowers blossomed and began to flourish
No gardener needed
Just mutual encouragement.
I see you now, tendrils wrapped around her
Your thorns are stuck in her, claiming her heart,
Yet somehow I know they’ll never keep us apart
I know the day that I choose, I can come and sit beside you
But for the time being, you’ll guard her heart
I look at her now, all covered in bloom
And it soothes my soul
Oh,
How I love the two of you.
